Armenain Church
The modern church came into being in 1724. It is said to have been built in the vacant land purchased in 1720 by an Armenian named Kenanentekh Phanoosh for building a cemetery for his community. The floor inside the church is made of blocks of stone. The spiralling stair-case leads to the gallery on the first floor.

Academy of Fine Arts
There is one auditorium and several art galleries. It was established in 1933 by the late Lady Ranu Mukherjee. Its collections include contemporary Indian art, miniature paintings, Indian textiles, weapons and sculptures.

Agri Horticultural Gardens
This garden was founded by William Carey in 1820. It has a significant collection of botanical varieties with facilities for gardeners and plant / flower lovers.

Asiatic Society
Founded in 1784, the Asiatic Society houses valuable works of art, including original paintings by Rubens, Guiles, Reynolds etc. and the Ashokan Rock edict. The Library has an interesting collection of manuscripts, copper plates, coins and engravings.

Bangiya Sahitya Parishad
The library was established in 1893 in a building donated by Raja Nabaklishna Roy. The main purpose was to encourage the growth & spread of Bengali literature like other languages, under the British. Started under the name of “Academy of Bengali Literature” was changed in 1894 to “Bangiya Sahitya Parishad”.

Belur Math
Situated at the bank of river Ganga, it is the headquarters of Ramkrishna Math and Mission. The temple's architecture is an unusual mix of a mosque and a church. The museum dedicated to Swami Vivekananda's life is an added attraction.

Birla Industrial & Technological Museum
A permanent exhibition of scientific and technological exhibits which are conceived,designed and fabricated by the museum itself was established in 1956 and is a trendsetter for the later science museums.

Birla Temple
A most recent addition (1996) to the city's pilgrimage points, this temple in south Kolkata attracts all kinds of people not just pilgrims through its architectural splendour. It is 48.7 m high and cost about 180 million rupees to built. Built entirely of marble - this temple of Lord Vishnu looks spectacular at night.

Birla Planetariam
It is one of the largest in the world and has regular astronomical shows in English, Bengali and Hindi. Set amidst trees and lawns, here one finds science out of doors and alive.

Botanical Gardens
The garden was laid out in 1787 and it is the largest of its kind in India. Best known for its 200 year old banyan tree that has a circumference of 900 ft and over 300 aerial roots. It is also the home to a variety of rare plants from all over the world.

Calcutta University
The University of Calcutta was founded on January 24, 1857. The University is now being governed by the Calcutta University Act, 1979. The Vice-Chancellor is the principal executive and academic officer of the University. It has 58 PG teaching departments and 209 affiliated colleges, serving about 300,000 students.

Dakshineshwar Temple
Built by Rani Rashmoni in the 19th century. A place of pilgrimage where Ramkrishna Parmhansa Deva worshipped Goddess Kali. Considered to be the holiest of Hindu temples, the Dakshineshwar temple is visited by thousands of pilgrims especially on 1st January for the Kalpataru Utsav.

Eden Park (Eden Gardens)
This sprawling old park has a very ‘natural’ element which makes it different from the other parks. It is typified by the lush green of the enveloping trees, trimmed carpet of grass and a beautiful gardens exhibiting a riot of colourful flowers. The colourful and well designed Burmese Pagoda is a proud heritage of the city.

Energy Park
Opened in 2002, it is a joint venture of WEBREDA, Science Technology & Renewable Energy Department, Govt. of West Bengal

Fire Temple (Agni Mandir)
This is the Parsee place for worship and offering prayers. The Ezra Street built in September 1839 is now closed - and a new one has been established at Metcalfe Lane on 12th October, 1912. It has a spacious hall in the ground floor. On the top floor burns the 'sacred' fire of the Persians where admittance is strictly forbidden.

General Post Office (GPO)
The General Post Office (GPO), the commercial hub of the city designed by Walter B. Grenville was built in 1864. Its high domed roof and tall Ionic-Corinthian pillars give the building an imposing appearance marking the boundaries of the former Fort William, destroyed during Shiraj-ud-Daulah's attack on the British Settlement in 1756. It is also alleged to be the site of the notorious Black Hole of Calcutta.
High Court
Built in 1862 - this is the oldest High Court in India. It is an is an exact replica of the Stand Hans in Ypres, Belgium. The building was designed on Gothic lines by Walter Grenville and is reminiscent of the colleges in Oxford. The original courthouse sands on the estern side and the later annexes have been built around it. The various libabraries include the Bar Library and the Judges Library.
Howrah Bridge (Rabindra Setu)
Acrossing the river Hooghly this is a fine specimen of hanging structural workmanship. The bridge was completed in the year 1941 connecting both the sister city after replacing the old pontoon bridge. With a length of 705m and height 97m it is the world's largest cantilever bridge. About 26,500 tonnes of steel were used to build the bridge which expands by 1 m during the summer heat.
Indian Museum
It is the largest museum in the country and has rare collections of antiques,armour & ormanents, fossils, skeletons, mummies, Mughal paintings etc. It is also famous for its impressive collection of sculptures belonging to ancient and medieval India.

Jain Temple
This magnificent temple built of marble is dedicated to Sheetalnathji - 10th of the 24 Jain Tirthankaras. Built in 1867 it is a collection of 4 pagoda like shrines set in geometrical gardens and ponds. The Jewel Box temple of Kolkata is decorated with ornate mass of mirrors, coloured stones and glass mosaics.

Job Charnock's mausoleum
The church was built entirely of stone, between 1784 - 87 and is one of the earliest example of Bitish masonry in Kolkata. This churchyard has historical interest with octagonal shaped Charnock's mausoleum. The 174 ft high stone tower was made between 1874 - 84. The church has marvellous stained glass windows.

Jorasanko Thakurbari
The home of branch of the Tagore family and the birth place of our National Poet Rabindra Nath Tagore,is now the premises of Rabindra Bharati University and a museum of Tagore memorabilia.

Jewish Synagogue
Egra Sahib had built this Synagogue in memoir of his father. Opened for public worship in September, 1884. It is 140 ft in length and 82 ft in width. The tower bears a marvellous sight with a clock fitted to it. This followed the design which became popular in the post-Renaissance period.

Kali Temple - Kalighat
Kalighat is situated on the bank of Adi (old) Ganga and is a sacred pilgrimage center for the Hindus. This is the sacred spot where a toe of the Goddess's right foot is believed to have dropped. Santosh Roy constructed this temple in 1809. Kalighat is also famous for Kalighat Pot - an indigenous canvas art.

Kumartuli (Potter's Lane)
This is the home to numerous idol makers known as kumhars or potters. These artisans defly mould wet clay over straw creating life - like beautiful images of gods and goddesses. They are in geat demand for almost every festivity in Bengal - and the most important occasion being the Durga Puja.

Marble Palace
Built by Raja Rajendra Mullick in 1885, the building is famous for marble wall & floors, antiques, paintings of Ruben, curios, marble statues, floor to ceiling mirrors and collection of rare birds.

Millenium Park
The Millennium Park built by KMDA was inaugurated on December 26, 1999. It is a place where one can relax and top up the oxygen supply.

Missionaries of Charity
The order formed by Mother Teresa, was formed in 1950. Among their vows is the promise 'to give wholehearted and free service to the poorest of the poor'. This was put into action with the setting up of several homes for destitutes. Her body was burried in the same building (now known as Mother House) after her death in 1997.

Nakhoda Mosque
The present structure of this mosque was built by Abdur Rahim Osman and completed in 1942. The architecture is Indo Saacenic - modeled as per the tomb of Akbar in Sikandra in red sandstone. It has two lofty minarets each 46 m high. The four storey mosque can accomodate 10,000 people.

National Library
The National Library, India is the largest library in the country. Housed in the former residence of the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal, the library contains almost 2 million books and nearly half a million documents. The library is designated to collect, disseminate and preserve the printed material produced in the country.

Nehru Children's Museum
Collections include puppets depicting the Ramayana and Mahabharata dolls wearing national costumes from different countries. It also has miniature working models of railway crossings and other novelties and an elementary science gallery.

Netaji Research Bureau
Collections kept in the ancestral house of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose include personal effects, photographs, letters of Netaji and other documents. The Bureau also sells books written on Netaji.

Nicco Park
It is the Calcutta's first amusement Park opened in 1991. A toy train takes passengers all around the park and a cable car gives a birds eye view. One may have fun rides like Water Chutes and Striking Cars.

Rabindra Sadan
Foundation stone was laid on 8th May 1961 by the late Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and it started its functions from October 1967. It has been erected a mark of homage to Gurudev Rabindranath through the relative branches of performing arts. Rabindra Sadan is the seat of Bengali culture venue for drama, programmes.

Rabindra Sarobar
Situated in south Kolkata this artificial lake comprises of rowing clubs, safari garden,children's park, swimming clubs, and an open air theatre (Nazrul Mancha). This huge lake is a beehive of activity. It also has a Japanese Budhdhist temple. Rowing and kayaking competitions are held regularly.

Race Course
This race course is regarded as one of the best in India. Horse racing started in Kolkata in 1819 under the aegis of Royal Turf Club. Apart from races the ground is also used for playing polo. The racing season is July - September and November - March.

Raj Bhavan
This palatial structue built at the insistence of Lord Wellesley from 1798 to 1805 in the image of Kedteston Hall in England. It has six gates with statue of a lion on top of each. Prior to independence this was the residenc of the Governor Generals. This is now the official residence of the Governor of West Bengal.

Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture

Shahid Minar (Octerlony Monument)
A 48.16 m (158 ft) high monument in the style of Qutab Minar of Delhi. The tower has 198 steps. Connected with a famous Black Hole Tragedy. Place of important public(political) meetings. Previously known as Octerlony Monument (after David Octerlony),it was renamed after the martyrs in 1969.

St. Paul's Cathedral
This Anglican cathedral built in 1847 and is 85 m high. It is a perfect example of Indo Gothic architecture. The stained glass windows are considred to be the best in the country.

Swami Vivekananda's Home
Swamiji's birthplace and residence has been renovated and made into a museum - depicting among others furniture of that period. It houses a computerised library, seminar hall, research centre and a centre for relief.

Swabhumi
It is a heritage park with sections for art and crafts, a food court and folk entertainment. The park is a joint venture between the Kolkata Corporation and the Bengal Ambuja Group and is a worth while spot to visit.

Tipu Sultan Mosque
Tipu Sultan's Mosque or the Dharamtollah Mosque was constructed by Mohammed, the son of Tipu Sultan in 1842. But others who credit its construction to Ghulam Mohammed, who built a mosque at Tollygunge, which incidentally bears an uncanny resemblance to the former. The Mosque is double-aisled, with multiple domes.

Town Hall
Constructed in 1814, this memory of the British Raj reflects Doric style of architecture. It now houses Kolkata Panorama - a high tech interactive museum - which depicts the lives and times of Kolkata fom the time of city's inception.

Victoria Memorial
The foundation stone of this building was laid in 1906 by King George V. This grand edifice in marble is an example of Indo Saacenic architecture an houses an excellent collection Raj memorablia, including paintings and manuscripts.

2nd Hooghly Bridge (Vidyasagar Setu)
This bridge is the longest one of its kind in India and the major cable stayed bridges in the world. It represens the Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco. The total length of the bridge is 822.96m. The lowest part of the bridge is 33.87 to 34.38 meters high from the highest water level of the river Hooghly.
Vivekananda Bridge
Formerly known as Willingdon Bridge over Hooghly River at Bally,was opened in 1931.It comprises of seven spans of 105m. and has a doble Rail track and a 5.4m. up and down roadway for vehicles and 2.4m. up and down pathway for the Pedestrian

Writer's Building
The building derives its name from the custom of junior writers or clerks of East India Company. A cluster of 13 four storey building, Writer's. is a classic instance of Gothic architecture stnads on 10 acres of land and houses 6000 employees. This building now houses the state government secretariat.

Zoological Gardens
Opened to Public in 1870. One of the largest and finest zoos in India and a venue for large number of emigrant birds. It houses a children zoo and has a spearate aquarium across the street.
