Suchitra Mitra on Kolkata
The former Sheriff of Kolkata speaks of her love for this city.

Variation is the sign of life, sameness is the signof death.

Not by imitation - Kolkata has tought how to live by one's own self - like a silent melody Kolkata hums in my ear - "Do something! Do something! If you remain static - that means death. Come out of the barriers of your thoughts and free yourself".

This wonderful city is the peace of my soul, resting place for my life, playground of my childhood, workplace of my youth and the final resting place at this old age. Who founded this city? Was it Jb Charnock or Sabarna RoyChowdhury - I am not bothered a bit about that. I know other cities have edifices that mention about the old and dead history of that place - but the dust of Kolkata is a vivid testimony of the daily struggle of the people of its citizens.

Once the seat of British Empire became the center of ousting its imperial rulers. Its roads and streets have echoed the protest against all wrongs - procession of the masses. Its literature, art, music, poetry, sculpture has influenced the whole nation. I have stared with utter amazement at the sheer life of this city and I have walked along with it.

The city has been heaped with unjust remarks like "city of processions", "city of nightmares" - but it has rejected all of them. Religious fanaticism and secterain violence has never been able to tarnish the reputation of this city. With real love of the heart this city has decome the City of Joy. I do not know of any other city that exists with such variety of life in its every beat. Kolkata has given the power to break out of the stone walls of dead thoughts. Hail Kolkata!
